Several myths and superstitions surrounding mirrors date back to ancient times. The belief that seven years of bad luck would result from breaking a mirror is linked to the Roman belief that it took seven years for a soul to renew. One of the most common symbols carved onto Pictish stones in Scotland is a mirror. It is believed to be a Celtic association with astrology and using a mirror to read the heavens. According to legend, Pythagoras tipped a mirror at the moon to read the future. In the mythology of vampires, the absence of a soul makes them lack a reflection.
