The queen bee runs the whole hive. Not only does she lay eggs that will be the hive’s next generation of bees, but she also uses pheromones to communicate and direct the other bees of the colony. If the queen dies, the (all female) worker bees will select a larva and feed it “royal jelly” that enables the larva to grow into a new queen bee. Royal jelly, which is fed only to larvae and the queen, differs from honey and is naturally bitter and sour. The other bees feed off honey to survive the winter months.
