The exact recipe is a trade secret but here’s what we do know: The whirling globs of a lava lamp are made of paraffin wax. To create the “lava” like thickness, compounds like carbon tetrachloride are added to increase the wax’s density. The liquid the wax floats in can be water or mineral oil, with dyes and sparkles. When the light at the bottom of the base is turned on, it heats up the wax which increases the volume and causes it to float. When the globs reach the top of the lamp, it cools down, the volume decreases and it begins to fall back to the bottom to begin its journey again.
